Afraid of being rejected, well, most of the times this is the reason. So they act like they are stupid when they are not, because that can be an excuse, they will not be taken seriously. They have lots of girlfriends, well, not girlfriends but girls, they don't care about people so they don't are boyfriend' material enough to have relationships. They may like someone but then the fear attacks...
... and the only solution is to continue being stupid, losing who they may like, unless they gain the courage to admit and show who they really are
